What happens when the highlight of the day is bed time?

As I write this, the US war against Iran is in its 3rd day.  Our president has made the major mistake of having peace talks while preparing to bomb a country.  America is about to get into another Vietnam, without any of the support it could have had if this were a just cause.  To make things worse, it feels like the war was started to cover up the Monster's presence in the Epstein Files. I wonder how many people will die because this madman wants to have a legacy that survives him

Why did I open with this?

Over the weekend, the most common thing in our YouTube feeds were talking heads and their discussions about the war.  It's hard to escape the insanity that is going on in the "Real World" when a madman's fancies are destroying everything America stood for.  I'm glad that my nephew is out of the military, as he'd be part of the cannon fodder the Monster is using to achieve his goals.

Neither RQS nor I bothered getting dressed today.  It rained a little and the snow has melted a bit.  Soon, parking will be "easy" to find as before the snow storms hit.  Today was one of our relaxation days where we did nothing, save for having breakfast and dinner.  I shouldn't say we did absolutely nothing - RQS finished the reorganization of her storage shelves, and things are much easier for her to get at.

Part of me is looking forward to going home tomorrow.  My reasons are simple - I want to get back to work on my cruise cost calculation spreadsheet, and I can only work on it at home.  This has been a fun project for me, and something I will likely keep playing with as time progresses.  I already have some enhancements I'd like to work on that would make the spreadsheet much more useful.  But it will take some time to implement them.

My brother looks like he'll have a new job, and it looks like we have new tenants for the family homestead.  Although we will have money coming in, we will either need to reinvest it in the house, or let the next owner do so.  I'd have rather sold the property, but the timing of everything is fouling that plan up for now.  Assuming he has the new job, I'll get together with him for a last dinner before he moves out of town.  Yes, he'll be returning home to check on things now and then, but things won't be the same as before.  I'll likely get stuck managing the property - something I don't relish doing.

I've been trying to avoid dwelling too much on politics

"Hail! Hail! Freedonia, Land of the free and the brave."

Around 90 years ago, the 4 Marx Brothers made a movie called "Duck Soup" which lampooned the lead up to war and the absurdity of fighting that war.  I wonder what witticisms Groucho would say if he were still around to see the Orange Snowflake make a mess of America and the world.

Only a fool would take the GOP speaker of the house seriously when he blamed the House of Representatives' shutdown on Zohran Mamdani's run for Mayor of NYC.  How could a man from an opposition party, not involved in the Federal Government be the cause of the shutdown?  Sadly, this is the level of lunacy that passes for GOP logic these days.

As I see it, we will have some interesting pain points for DC politicians coming up as I write the entry:

  • 11/01/25 - SNAP Benefits (Food Stamps) & ACA Healthcare Subsidies End.

This is going to hurt poor people, especially in the GOP run states.  Families will not have the funds to buy enough food for their families, nor will they be able to pay the healthcare insurance premiums coming due in 2026.

  • 11/04/25 - Election Day.

Although there will be no nationwide election, several local elections may indicate how disenchanted people are with what's going on in Washington, DC and tell us who they blame for the impasse.

  • 11/05/25 - The Shutdown becomes the longest in American History.

It will be over a month since the last full paycheck for virtually all Federal workers (save for the Post office).  Given that most people in America live paycheck to paycheck, and that they are 3 paychecks away from financial disaster, the pain becomes very real for most government workers.

  • 11/21/25 - The day the GOP's Continuing Resolution Bill expires.

This is an interesting date.  The speaker of the house has kept the house out of session, so that the newly elected representative from Arizona can't be sworn in.  Why is this?  He doesn't want the 218th vote to be cast, so that a house resolution makes it to the floor, calling for the Epstein Files to be released.

If the house stays out of session, there is no Continuing Resolution bill for the senate to approve, so the House GOP line that the Senate Democrats must pass the bill to reopen the government.  At this point the speaker has a hard decision to make: Does he keep the house shut down and be THE cause of the shutdown?  Or, does he bring the house members back in session, and see the Epstein File resolution pass?

Sadly, the Democrats in the Senate caved before this entry was to go live.  In one sense, this is a good thing, as the GOP didn't decide to "Go Nuclear" and eliminate the filibuster. (I did not support this option, as I was "all in" on the shutdown.)  At least, we'll get some movement towards releasing the Epstein files, now that the congresswoman from Arizona has been sworn in.

A magnificent and glorious shutdown - may it last for a few more months.

As I write this, we are a little over two weeks into the federal government shutdown, and people are hurting. A food pantry has been set up just outside of West Point (the Army's service academy) to serve the needs of military families who are doing without pay.  Other "Essential Workers" such as Air Traffic Controllers are taking sick leave to work jobs in the "Gig Economy" to pay for necessities.  In short, the Democrats in the Senate are successfully using their only tool left in the political tool chest to protect Obamacare subsidies for the poor and middle class in America.

The GOP is wrongfully claiming that the Democrats are demanding healthcare (and other benefits) for people illegally in this country.  They are lying, as they do not want to anger the Orange Snowflake by making things right for the American public.  They only serve to benefit the "Billionaire Bandit class" (not to be confused with "Vanilla Billionaires") who see the average person as only a disposable tool to be used in increasing their wealth among their class.  The "Vanilla Billionaire" (and there are many of them) doesn't see the average person as a tool.  They see these people worthy of government services and want to make sure that these people have no reason to rebel against our capitalist system which allows the wealthy to enjoy their wealth.

Are people hurting?  Yes!  Yet, many of us participated in the "No Kings" protests being held around the USA.  What is the GOP message about these protests?  It is that these protests are "Anti American."  Hmmm....  If we didn't protest against unjust laws 250 years ago, we'd still be flying the Union Jack over our land.  And the GOP is saying that all protest against their authoritarian ways is wrong.  As George Takei said about William Shatner in a celebrity roast (and as I'd say to the snowflake), "He can go F*** himself and the horse he came in on. (And in that roast, Shatner did ride in on a horse.)  Although I was unable to attend a "No Kings" march in October, I hope to do so the next time one is called.  Constant pressure from all sides is needed to make the GOP crack.

At this time, the Speaker of the House, Mike Johnson, is keeping the house out of session, so that he doesn't have to swear in a new Congresswoman from Arizona.  Why, you might ask?  Well, when she is officially in congress, she'll be the 218th vote to release the Epstein Files.  We know that the Snowflake's name is mentioned many times in those files, and we know that this is the one area that MAGA demands answers from the GOP - which are not being given.  Maybe the Democratic party should alter its message slightly and "officially" focus on the other names in these files, saying that they want to expose the names of the pedophiles in the "Donor Class".  Of course, the Snowflake would figure predominantly in what is revealed, but this would make it easier for GOP congressmen to abandon support for the snowflake.

Without the House being session, there is no hope for any compromise between Senate Democrats and the GOP.  So, I expect that this will be a very long (maybe record breaking) shutdown, as saying no to the GOP is the only leverage they have left, and would be foolish to give up before they had an iron clad commitment from the GOP that Democrats' needs will be met. And when the GOP cracks, watch the snowflake have a temper tantrum the likes you've never seen him have before.  I can't wait for this to happen!

Sorry, We're Closed!

At the time I'm writing this entry, the US government shutdown is 10 days old.  We have a president who is threatening to target the firing of federal workers in opposition party cities and states, to deny paying furloughed federal workers when the shutdown ends, and is willing to destroy the healthcare of Americans because he hated the person who set up the Affordable Care Act (a.k.a. Obamacare).  His lackeys on the GOP seem to be afraid to do anything to keep him in check, as if the Orange Snowflake is the Antichrist himself.

The only people who have been able to put a crimp in the snowflake's plans seem to be the Democrats in the US Senate.  Due to the Senate's filibuster rule, 45 Democrats have prevented the GOP (and the snowflake) from adopting a budget which kills off Obamacare.  As a result, our federal government has shut down, with minimal civilian functions and the military required to work without pay. And many of these essential employees have been calling in sick - no pay, no work.  I feel sorry for the understaffed air traffic controllers who work mandatory overtime, as they are being pushed to the brink of exhaustion.  I also feel sorry for many military families who have to make do without the paychecks of their breadwinning service member's paycheck.  And I feel sorry for all of those federal workers who are going without pay and have entered the gig economy (doordash, Uber, etc.) to help make ends meet.  (I'll bet that some essential workers are calling in sick to work gig jobs just to earn the cash needed to buy groceries.)  Yet, as much as I feel sorry for these people, they are collateral damage in the war against tyranny, just as the civilian lives that were lost because they lived too close to a munitions plant being bombed in WW2.

With all the pain suffered by these essential workers, they are pawns in a winner take all game of politics. If the snowflake wins, there will never again be a challenge to his power.  So, it is essential that the Democrats stand firm against the snowflake.  I figure that after 3 months, the system will crack.  Essential employees will start to quit, so that they can pay their bills working other jobs (if they can be found).  Service members may not re-up their enlistments, and look to find work in the civilian economy. And, if the transportation secretary starts firing workers in the already understaffed air traffic control system, the American skies will be empty - civilian air transit will be at a standstill.  Going 3 months without pay will make this a very bleak Thanksgiving and Christmas for the affected workers, and I can't wait for things to break down.  Only then will the snowflake's support among his supporters start to crack.  And I hope this happens soon.

I'm already starting to think of what will happen if this shutdown lasts much longer than I hope and expect.  I have a cruise scheduled for next year that sails out of Southampton, UK.  How would I get there if civilian air traffic in the US is shut down?  I could either cancel the cruise if the shutdown lasts into April OR consider buying airfare from Toronto to London, UK and going into Canada by land.  In my opinion, we all must start planning for a long shutdown, as I believe that the Democrats need to go "all in" on this issue.

Keep your eyes open on what happens in the House.  As I write this, the House is being kept artificially closed for 2 reasons: (1) to prevent a budget bill acceptable to the Democrats being voted on, and (2) to keep a new Democratic member from Arizona from being sworn in, and triggering a vote to release the Epstein Files.  Why is number 2 important?  Well, if there is one thing that the snowflake fears is the release of these files, as they potentially implicate him in Epstein's crimes against underaged girls.  To me, the snowflake fears this more, as he is unable to control enough of the GOP to prevent their release.
