A birthday dinner at Chazz Palminteri's (a short post)

 

Tomorrow is RQS's birthday, and I wanted to take her out tonight.  (It's easier to get a good meal on Saturday than it is on Sunday at many places, and I wanted to make sure she enjoyed the meal.)

Originally, I wanted to take RQS out to a place where we had to get dressed up a little.  But, with the weather as cold as it is, getting dressed up didn't make sense.  Instead, we both decided to dress for the weather, and drive down to White Plains for dinner.

Chazz Palminteri's place is in the heart of White Plains, NY, in an area where one must park at a garage, than on the street.  Although they have an arrangement with the hotel next door to use their valet parking, I did not want to remove my car's key fob from my handbag just to have my car parked.  Instead, I drove into the public garage nearby, parked the car (not needing to tip the valet anything when picking up the car) and walked to the restaurant.

How do I describe the food?  Well, we split an order of Calamari for an appetizer, and it was some of the best Calamari we've ever had.  The pieces were lightly battered, and cooked to the point of wellness just before the meat becomes rubbery.  It was a pleasure to eat the squid, and I almost wished I could have ordered a dinner portion for myself.  Instead, I ordered the Seafood Fra Diavolo pictured above and feasted on the clams, scallops, and lobster tail resting on a base of spinach fettuccine, YUM!  Everything was cooked to perfection!

Eventually, we left the restaurant and drove home.  It was a nice day, and something we'll do again when the budget permits. 

I inherited a dust collector. (And wish I didn't.)

 

As many of you already know, I scheduled a trip to California this past April to see my uncle, but he passed away 10 days before my arrival.  This weekend, I visited my brother to say hello and came back with the above "dust collector".

But first....

We had been waiting several days for notice that RQS's prescription had made it to the drug store.  Given all of the hassles RQS had at the hospital shortly before Thanksgiving, it made sense for her to pick up the prescription during 2024.  This would allow her to avoid the headache of getting this expensive prescription renewed by a new doctor shortly into the new year, when she'd be under time pressure to both get the prescription renewed and to pick it up.  This notice came two days after Christmas, so we scheduled our visit to RQS's neighborhood over the weekend.

It was strange driving to RQS's place on a Saturday, when there were none of the usual traffic jams that are normally endured while heading towards her place.  If we had choices, we would not have been on the roads, as the fog was so thick that one could barely see well enough to drive.  Yet, we made it to RQS's place, and took care of multiple pharmacy visits.

Next, it was off to see my brother.  It was good to see him, although things are not going well between him and my sister in law.  I won't go into details here, but I will say that he has a strained relationship with his wife that he may be making worse.  As soon as we got there, it was off to a seafood joint that my brother picked out.  Both of us picked the twin lobster dish, while RQS had the lobster roll.  All of us were filled to the gills by the time we left.

When we got back to my brother's house, I gave him a gag gift for Christmas.  This gift was a novelty takeoff on a "Magic 8 Ball", where one could get an answer of "Yes", "No", or "Maybe" by reading the message at the bottom of the ball.  My gift was a "Magic 6 Ball" that I found on Woot.com.  Unlike the 8-Ball, the 6-Ball produces only useless answers.  It'll make for a curious paperweight.  He asked me to hold on for a minute while he went inside the house to pick up something for me.  He returned with a statue that my uncle won for his work in TV.  Now, I have a dust collector that I can not sell, nor wish to give away.  However, I would have rather had the chance to meet him one last time, and to know him better....

Philadelphia Trip - 09/10/24

 

The main tourist part of Philadelphia was on "lock down" today, as the presidential debate was being held at the National Constitutional Center on Independence Mall.  This meant that the visitors center and associated buildings would be off-limit to visitors due to security concerns, and that we'd have to go elsewhere for our tourism fix.

As I noted in yesterday's post, I had GI Tract issues last night and blocked up the toilet.  This morning, RQS and I had to get up early, so that we'd be ready for the maintenance engineer when he arrived.  We were originally told that this man would arrive between 8 and 9 am.  But we later found out that he'd arrive around 9 and 10 am.  This was more than acceptable to us, as RQS would be able to get an extra hour of rest.  Around 9:30, the maintenance engineer arrived, and he used a snake to unclog the pipes.  (The one thing you can't say about me anymore is that I am full of s**t.)  It took a while, but he was done by 10 am.  Then, the cleaning ladies came in to clean up the bathroom before we could get ready to go out for the day.

Noon came, and so did RQS's cousin.  Now, we had to do the hokey-pokey to get into her cousin's clown car. After contorting ourselves into some unnatural positions, we had managed to fit ourselves into her car, and we were off to the Penn Museum to spend much of the day.  We walked through several galleries including Ancient Egypt, the Middle East, and Africa.  By 3:30, we were pooped, and it was time to go to South Philly for some fish at Anastasi Seafood.

RQS's cousin took us past the corner where Pat's and Geno's compete selling cheese steaks. And then we walked up the street a few blocks to a fish monger who would cook food to order to be eaten in a street side shed.  Her cousin had mistakenly this was another place she had gone to, but we decided to eat here anyway.  Can I say much about the food?  Not really.  This is not a restaurant after all - this is a fish monger that cooks food.  The seafood platter wasn't bad, but it wasn't NYC's Oyster Bar either.

We were dropped off at the hotel around 6 pm, and we relaxed a bit before going out for some ice cream.  It looked like this was a day where the police had to make their presence known, as they didn't want to be held to task if anything would occur in the upcoming debate.  Once we finished our ice cream, it was back to the hotel to watch the debate.  Would it change any minds?  No.  Hard core people with locked in positions would never be swayed by a debate.  But it did show that our former president wasn't up to the task of leading this country.  I hope that he doesn't get the chance to do so again.

Norwegian Fjord Cruise Vacation - 06/20/24 (Sea Day #2)

 

The day started at 6:00 am, with the sun having been out for an hour or two.  We had gone through choppy seas last night, and the motion of the ship (thanks to the ship's stabilizers) helped rock us to sleep.  This allowed us to wake up fully refreshed for the day....

After a hearty breakfast, we decided to go to Princess's pop up seafood restaurant, "Crab Shack" for lunch.  So, we called the reservations desk and found that the "nominal fee" for this meal would be $39/pp. + 18% Svc. Chg,  We registered ourselves for lunch and proceeded to kill time until for our feast.  And feast we did!  Each of us ordered a bowl of clam chowder and a seafood bucket which contained mussels, craw fish, shrimp, snow crab legs, and small clams of various types.  Both buckets contained enough food to feed two people, and I even had to give up with food left in the bucket.  Before leaving, we changed our next specialty dinner reservation to the middle of next week.  This way, we wouldn't have to eat two large meals in a single day.

A little bit later, RQS went out to exercise and I had some quiet time to myself.  It was nice to be able to rest and let my stomach do its thing for a while.  When RQS returned, we put a load of laundry into the washer, and moved it into the dryer when it was done.  This will give us another 5-6 days worth of clothing we can wear, but will force us to do another load sometime next week.

Fish & Chips

 

Today was a strange day for me.  I was late for work because I left my cell phone at home, and decided to go back and get it before arriving at work.  As much as I was going to lose an hour's pay, I treat my cell phone like people used to be admonished to treat their American Express Cards - "Don't leave home without it."  I certainly didn't want to do that....

Work was the usual dull grind, and I was trying to keep myself awake all day.  It was harder than usual, as I noticed that I didn't remember little steps I took while in the middle of indexing a document.  (How did I get to step C, when I didn't recall doing step B and the evidence showed that step B was completed properly?)  As usual, I started waking up towards the end of the day, realizing that RQS would soon be here for the weekend.

RQS and I have been trying out different cuisines each week she comes up here.  We're almost at the point of repeating restaurant types - but not yet.  I told her that we had another food category to try out - "Atlantean Food" (food now eaten in Atlantis.)  It took her a minute or two, and then she picked up on my reference - Seafood!  And we then proceeded to have a nice fish dinner in a place where one would not expect good food - a nondescript strip mall just outside of downtown Ossining. Afterwards, it was off to the blue Pig in Croton for dessert, and then we called it a night.  A great way to end the day....
